Writing & Research

Ranger Writer and Researcher

Regardless of the path our students choose after high school, we want them to be prepared as we possibly can for their next step. The best way for us to do so is by sharpening their critical thinking skills, their writing skills, and their analysis skills. Whether a person needs to solve a problem, write a paper or simply analyze a situation, they will need these skills. So how do we prepare our students?...
1.) We focus on argumentation. (claims, evidence and warrants).
2.) We develop and improve their skills to do research,  gather information and communicate that information effectively.
3.) We explore the different formats in which that information will need to be communicated to others (presentations & interviews, resumes & cover letters, research papers and term papers, APA and MLA style for college).
4.) We assess their ability to demonstrate these skills, we analyze the results, and we adjust accordingly.

"Everything's An Argument"

One of the most important skills the English Department teaches at the high school level is related to "arguing".
"The argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the student to investigate a topic; collect, generate, and evaluate evidence; and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner."
-Purdue Owl
For anyone to be effective at arguing, persuading, or even explaining, their position or point of view on a topic, they need to make use of rhetorical appeals.
These include:
Pathos (emotional appeal)
Logos (logical appeal)
Ethos (ethical appeal)
