Physical Education
Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year
Mr. Eaton
About Mr. Eaton

I am the Physical Education teacher here at the Hamilton Intermediate School.  I grew up in upstate New York and moved to Ohio in 1985 and to Columbus in 2004.  I began working at Hamilton Local Schools in 2006.  This begins my 14th year as a Ranger.

Working with the students here at HIS is one of the highlights of my life.  If you would like to contact me regarding any aspect of the Physical Education Program please feel free to contact me here at the school at [email protected]
I usually begin each school year by having each class undergo the physical testing.  Each student will be participating in a distance run (1/2 mile for 4th grade, 1 mile for 5th and 6th grade) for time, pushups, sit ups, vertical jump, standing broad jump and the sit and reach flexibility test.  This will be tested both in the beginning of the school year and at the end of the school year to establish some tracking data.  Please make sure you child has appropriate footwear for gym class and that all pertinent medical information is up to date regarding your child's ability to undergo the testing.

However, with the current situation of Covid-19, things are going to have to be flexible as we work with the virtual class setting.  I appreciate everyones understanding as we work to get you the best physical education experience we can under the circumstances.

Grading Policy

If we are in an "In School" or "Hybrid" Model

Students are graded on a pass/fail basis in the areas of participation and preparation.  Preparation requires a student to have the proper footwear for gym class.  General purpose sneakers, basketball shoes, tennis shoes, running shoes, etc are all examples of proper footwear.  Boots, dress shoes, flip flops etc are examples of inappropriate footwear.  If you are not sure please contact me to make sure.  Any combination of not participating, whether by choice or by teacher disciplinary removal, or not prepared for a class causes that student to fail that class period.  If a student accumulates 4 or more class periods of failing in a marking period, they will fail the class for that marking period.  In addition, if a student is not in attendance in at least 50 percent of the classes for any given marking period, they will receive a failing grade in Physical Education class.  Students must pass at least 3 of the 4 marking periods during the year to pass gym class.

If we are in a "Virtual Model"

Students will be graded according to the following parameters: One point for attendance each day of gym class, one point for preparation (they will need to be ready for exercise just as if they were in the gym), one point for participation in whatever activity we are doing, and one point for an assignment (there will be some written assignments like quizzes).  The total points a student can get for any one day is 4 points.  There are approximately 10 classes per marking period for a total of 40 points.  Students must get at least 25 total points in order to receive a passing grade for the marking period.  Students must pass at least three of the four marking periods to pass gym class.

2020-21 Ohio Department of Education Standards for Physical Education
