They finished this unit of study by enjoying a visit from Dr. Carol Engler from Ashland University and originator of Empathic Education. She read the Coretta Scott King Award book "Each Kindness" and also shared with them her experiences of life during the civil rights movement. Dr. Engler had first hand experiences with events that happened during these times due to her own grandfather being one of the first Caucasian members of the NAACP. The students were very receptive to the conversation and were able to respond appropriately using newly learned vocabulary and connecting to their lives and the experiences of the people they learned about.
