Hamilton Elementary Earns State Award From ODE
2018 High Progress School of Honor Logo
The Ohio Department of Education recently announced that Hamilton Elementary School was one of only 67 schools in the entire state, and the only public school in Franklin County, to earn the designation of 2018 School of Honor - High Progress.

Schools have to meet a specific set of criteria to earn a School of Honor - High Progress recognition. They include:

1. Enrollment eligibility: Eligible schools are Title I recipients or Title I eligible, and served 40 percent or more economically disadvantaged students, as reported in EMIS for the 2017-2018 school year.

2. Gains in Student Performance: Student performance on Ohio State Tests over a five-year period (2014 through 2018 school years) is evaluated against statewide gains. Test results are aggregated for grades 3 – 8, as well as English Language Arts I, English Language Arts II, Integrated Math I, Integrated Math II, Algebra I and Geometry end of course tests into a single rate. The school’s gains in its combined English language arts and math proficiency over the five most recent school years — calculated by subtracting the proficiency rate for 2014 from the rate for 2018 – must meet or exceed the 90th percentile of all statewide gains.

3. Gains in Graduation Rates: If applicable, the school’s gains in its 4-year graduation rate over the past five years from the Class of 2013 to the Class of 2017 (as reported on the 2014 and 2018 report cards) must meet or exceed the 90th percentile of all statewide gains in graduation. The gain is calculated by subtracting Class of 2013 rate from the Class of 2017 rate – for the gain over the five-year period.

4. Progress Grade: If applicable, the school must earn an ‘A’ or ‘B’ on the Overall (All Students) Value-Added measure for each of the three most recent years (2016, 2017 and 2018 report cards).

5. Gap Closing Grade: If applicable, the school must earn an ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’ on the Gap Closing Component on the Ohio School Report Card in 2018.

6. Conditional Selection: The award is subject to the Department’s review of the accuracy of the school’s submission of data for the 2017-2018 school year; and schools identified as Priority, Focus, Warning are not eligible to receive this award.

In his e-mail to Hamilton Elementary administrators, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Paolo DeMaria stated, "I extend my gratitude for the passion your education team members bring to their roles each day. At the heart of every child’s story is a caring educator who holds the profound belief that success belongs to all students. This award reflects your school’s commitment to ensuring all kids are ready for their futures."

Recognition such as this validates the work that educators are providing for our youngest Rangers throughout the foundation grade levels.

"There is no question that we have Ohio’s best educators working in our district," shared Hamilton Local Superintendent Mark Tyler. "We need to take a moment to thank the elementary and pre-k teams for their unrelenting effort to educate every student every day. We also need to thank our students for being committed to learning and displaying their knowledge when challenged during exams. Finally, I would like to thank the parents/guardians and Parent Teacher Organizations for their continued support in getting students to school on time, attending after school functions, and providing classroom resources for our teachers and students. Each of you can take ownership in this honor.”
