The Importance of Student Attendance

Students with regular attendance have every opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge to grow daily as students and lifelong learners. Students with inconsistent attendance lose out on opportunities for academic enrichment and intervention, as well as the consistency of expectations and structure that the school day provides.

However, we do understand that perfect attendance is not always possible. Students may sometimes miss school due to illness or appointments that cannot be scheduled outside of the school day. When this is the case, families are required to:

  • 614-491-8044 ext. 1399 - Call and report your child’s absence on the Hamilton Elementary Attendance Line. Please leave student name, teacher, date and reason for absence, and any other important information.

  • Upon return, send a written excuse (this includes doctor excuses) to school. This can be sent with your student or dropped off in the front office.

  • Make arrangements to make up any missed work with your child’s teacher.

All attendance counts! Tardies, early dismissals, and partial day absences all count toward student attendance. With recent changes to attendance laws, schools and families are held to even higher standards for student school attendance. Failure to attend school regularly can result in required attendance meetings, attendance intervention planning, truancy filings with the Franklin County Court System, and reporting of educational neglect with Franklin County Children Services.

Hamilton Local Schools policy allows families to excuse the first 65 hours of absence (roughly equivalent to ten days of school) by simply calling in to inform the school and sending in a parent excuse. After the first 65 hours, absences may only be excused with a doctor’s excuse. For additional information on Hamilton Local Schools’ attendance policies, please see the student handbook posted online at www.HamiltonRangers.org
