Hamilton Local School District 2020-2021 School Year Operations Update
July 29, 2020

Dear Hamilton Local Families,

I want to begin by thanking each one of you for your patience and understanding as we have worked to determine the safest way to begin the school year during this COVID pandemic. Following the review of updated guidance that I received this morning from Franklin County Public Health (FCPH), I am announcing to you that our school district will open the 2020-2021 school year remotely using our Virtual plan and we are suspending all extracurricular activities beginning Thursday, July 30, 2020.

If you reviewed the information shared on our website, you will know that our Virtual plan has a dedicated schedule for students to be online live with their teachers each day. If you haven’t reviewed our Ranger Restart 2020 document, please take a little time to do so. A few important details about our Virtual plan is that we will have live teacher instruction daily, attendance will be taken, and assignments will be graded.

We know some of you will need Chromebooks in your households to participate in our Virtual plan. We will be releasing our Chromebook distribution plan very soon to make certain our students have what they need.

Please understand that this decision wasn’t made lightly. I know some will be happy about this and others will be very upset. I want you to know that we want nothing more than to have our students back in our buildings, which is why we are not committing to staying in a virtual setting for nine weeks or a semester. At a minimum, I will be meeting weekly with local health commissioners to get their latest reports and recommendations to make the best operations decisions for our district as we move through this pandemic.

Yesterday, we announced that we are moving our school start date to Monday, August 31, 2020, pending Board approval. With that, we are also able to extend the deadline for parents to complete our restart survey to Friday, August 7, 2020, to choose between our semester-long Online Curriculum Option or sending your child back to school on the operation plan that our district chooses (Every Day, 50/50, Virtual). Click this link to access the parent survey.

Regarding extracurricular activities, we are in conversations with our local health officials about operating our extracurricular programs in a Phase 1 status similar to what we did in the spring. This would allow small groups to continue skills-based training in groups of 10 people at a time.

If you have any questions, please review our Opening Plans document and the update from Franklin County Public Health for answers before contacting us. If you have reviewed these documents and still have questions, contact us at [email protected] or call 614-491-8044.
Sincerely,

Mark Tyler, Superintendent
