4th Grade Math Expectations. What should I know?

  As a student entering the 4th grade you should know:

1.         Know and understand PLACE VALUE of whole numbers through 100,000 and decimals through hundredths.

Examples: 

Given the number 349,276 what is the value of the digit 9?

What is the place name for 9 in each number?

            92,346 ________________

89,213 ________________

            925,875 _______________

            698 __________________

Using the digits 6, 7, 9, 1, 0, 2, and 4 one time each, what is the largest number you can make?______________________________________

What is the smallest number you can make using each digit only once? ________


2.         Order whole numbers and decimals from least to greatest.

            Examples:

                        Put the numbers in order from least to greatest.

                            324,876       739,399                 324,768           739, 409

3.         Write/represent whole numbers and decimals using numerals, words, expanded notation and physical models.

Example:

                        Write the numeral for each number word:

                                    Six hundred fifty-four __________________________________

                                    Three thousand sixty one _______________________________

Write the numeral in expanded form.

                                    678, 265 _____________________________________________

 

4.         Add/subtract whole numbers with and without regrouping.

Example: Solve each problem:

                        890 – 346 =_______

1,000 – 356 =________


5.         Know basic facts for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Practice and know ALL basic facts through 12 daily!


6.         Tell time using an analog clock.

              You must know how to tell time using an analog clock. (A clock                with a face and numerals)


7.          Know the units for US Customary and Metric system for capacity,    weight, and length.


Example:

Which unit would you use to measure the distance to Mexico? 

      A.  meters     

      B. centimeters   

      C. kilometers    

      D. millimeters


8.         Identify and recognize 2 and 3 dimensional shapes using terms such as vertex, edge, angle, side, and face.


9.         Understanding of money. Be able to add/subtract/multiply/divide    using money.

            Example:

Vern bought a game for $13.42 plus tax. He paid the clerk the total amount of $14.31. How much tax was paid for the game?

10.            Solve problems using equations and inequalities.
