READING ALOUD

It is easy in today’s world to get caught up in watching television, playing video games, and keeping up to date on Facebook and Instagram, but you may be missing one of the most important forms of communication there is between a child and parent. One way to open up the lines of communication, regardless of age or grade level, is to read aloud to your child. Research shows us that reading aloud together with your child improves communication in the family, and provides excellent stimulation when it comes to discussing important matters.

Research also indicates that reading aloud is the single most important thing a parent can do at home to prepare your child for future academic success. “Hearing” a book also promotes the development of a strong vocabulary, and helps to increase the attention span of even students at the Intermediate level.

Reading aloud is a very easy way to improve listening skills as well. Students are able to practice listening over a period of time, and are able to create questions they may have about the text.

Here a few other recommendations to help with listening skills:
  • Ask him/her to retell small parts of the story.
  • Ask him/her questions while you read.
Some typical questions you could ask would be:
  • How do you feel about that?
  • What do you think will happen next?
  • Why do you think ______________ did that?
  • What would the results be if _____________?
  • Discuss the pros and cons of ______________?
  • What alternative would you suggest for ____________?
  • What choice would you have made concerning ___________?
A great way to select books is to keep your child’s interests in mind, and to make certain the book is “just right” (not too easy or too difficult). If you need extra help finding books to read aloud to your child, please email your child's ELA teacher for a list.
