To the families of Hamilton Local...

I want to begin my principal's message by bringing attention and showing appreciation for the outstanding faculty here at HES. I can confidently say that we have one of the best teaching and support teams in the state of Ohio. The team here at HES consistently goes above and beyond to guide and support the students of this great district. They commit selfless acts for each other and their students on a daily basis. As community members of this district, you can rest assure that your children are receiving a high quality education. Our team here at HES is making every effort to prepare the children of this district for the real world!

Teachers spend time not only collaborating within their grade level teams, but also with the grade levels above and below them in an effort to improve student achievement. Our collaborative approach to reviewing instructional practices and student data continues to strengthen our professional learning community. As a result, our student data continues to match or outperform not only many of the school districts throughout the state of Ohio, but nationally as well.

How can you help? The best thing you can do to help our elementary students improve academically is to read with them. By putting the following strategies into action, you can make a significant contribution to your child's ability to read and better understand the world around them:
  • Make reading a positive experience, by showing excitement when reading with your child.
  • When reading a book where the print is large, point word by word as you read. This will help your child learn that reading goes from left to right and understand that the word he or she says is the word he or she sees.
  • While reading, stop and ask questions about what is happening in the story and have the child predict what will happen next.
  • Read a child's favorite book over and over again. This will provide positive reinforcement and your child will gain confidence as they are able to successfully recognize words.
  • When you have finished reading, have your child retell what happened in the story.
  • If your child is already able to read fluently, simply listen to them read and discuss the story with them or read a higher-level book to them.
Please continue to work with your child on the items mentioned above and never hesitate to communicate with your child's teacher or the administration with any questions or concerns. If your schedule permits, I encourage you to become a parent volunteer. If not, we will have numerous assemblies and activities scheduled throughout the year where you will be welcomed to attend. Thank you for trusting us with your children and feel free contact me at 614-491-8044 x1300 if needed!

Best regards and Go Rangers,
Dr. Josh Conley, Principal
