What are Call Numbers?
**Fiction call number: FIC CHR
A Fiction call number always starts with FIC. That stands for the first 3 letters of the word Fiction and telling you it is a made up story.  The next 3 letters stand for the first 3 letters of the Author's last name. (for example and book written by Matt Christopher has a call number FIC CHR).

**Nonfiction call number: 636.75 WIL
A Nonfiction call number can be tricky to understand.  The best way to know if you're looking at a nonfiction call number is that it actually starts with numbers.  The word Numbers and Nonfiction both start with the letter N.  The letters that follow are the first 3 letters of the Author's last name.

**Biography call number: BIO JOR

A Biography call number is very similar to a Fiction call number.  The first 3 letters tell you what type of book it is...BIO stand for the first 3 letters of the word Biography.  The next 3 letters are the first 3 letters of "who the book's about."  (for example a book about your favorite basketball player Michael Jordan would have a call number of BIO JOR).

**Paperback call number: PB CLE

A Paperback call number also can be a little difficult to understand.  If you see that the call number starts with PB it's telling you the book is a paperback (PB short for paperback).  Next, just like the Fiction call number, the 3 letters that follow are the first 3 letters of the Author's last name.  In our library and in our paperback section the important thing to keep in mind is the 1st letter after PB.  (for example: PB CLE, pay attention to the C of CLE.  Match that letter up to the letter you'll find, in alphabetical order on the red sticker on the spine of the paperback book).  You will definitely find multiple C stickers in the paperback section, once you've found them you have to match the title on the spine of the book to the title you are searching for.

**Series call number: SER WAR
A Series call number tells you first that you a searching for a "fiction" book that is part of one of our series'.  These books are your Magic Tree House books, or American Girl books, or Little House of the Prairie books.  SER in the call number tells you the book will be found in the Series section.  The letters that follow are the first 3 letters of the Authors last name.

~I hope that these helpful hints will help you in your searches throughout the H.I.S. Library~
