Accelerated Reader
Updated: October 2019

What is it?
Accelerated Reader is an assessment that primarily determines whether or not a child has read a book and how well they have comprehended it. This program is an internet based programs providing assessments and additional information to teachers regarding reading rates, amount of reading, and other variables related to reading.

Additionally, a number of other assessments are available to assess higher order thinking skills and vocabulary. Quizzes can be taken on fiction and non-fiction books, textbooks, supplemental material, and educational magazines. Currently, this program is used primarily in second and third grades.  Third graders are required to achieve a certain number of points monthly as established by their classroom teachers.

When they have completed an Accelerated Reader goal, they visit the library for a visit to a “treasure chest” to reinforce and award their hard work towards meeting their goals.

How is it used?
There are several steps to using Accelerated Reader. First, teachers give a computer-based reading test to each students which will provide them with the student “Reading Range”. Then, students choose and read a fiction or non-fiction book, textbook, or magazine from a variety of classroom books or from the library. Teachers monitor reading including guided, paired, literature-based, and textbook reading.

Next, students take a quiz on the classroom computer. Teachers can create their own quizzes for those not available in Accelerated Reader. Finally, the teacher receives information that is intended to assist, motivate reading, monitor progress, and target instruction. Reports regarding reading level and comprehension skills are available through the software.

Accelerated Reader reports are generated on demand and help students, teachers, and parents monitor student progress. More than 30 reports are available regarding student reading, comprehension, amount of reading, diagnostic information, and other variables.

How can I tell if a book is an Accelerated Reader?
Hamilton Elementary library books are specifically marked on the spine with the reading level of the book as well as the point value. A bright orange label covers this information which makes it stand out to students when they are browsing the shelves. Paperback books are generally marked on the front cover the reading range and point value.

Although parents are not able to access our computer-based accelerated reader tests from their home computers, knowing your child’s reading range or level can prove helpful when visiting the public library perhaps during Summer months or when purchasing your child books for their own collection so that they are reading close to their ability level.

If you are curious about the accelerated reader level of any of your books at home, access the website: www.arbookfind.com

Search by title, author, etc. of the book you are interested in to see the level and point value!
